About

The Avantgarde Gallery researches, presents, and engages with art practices rooted in the historical Avant-Garde and its post-World War II developments.
Founded in Zagreb in 2024, the gallery’s mission is to explore how avant-garde strategies from the 20th century, shaped by significant social, political, and cultural changes, continue to influence artistic thought from the post-war era to today. Instead of using strictly generational or chronological frameworks, the gallery emphasizes the continuity of ideas, methodologies, and inquiry.
The Avantgarde Gallery’s main program features post-war and neo-avant-garde artists active since the 1950s, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe and their global connections. The gallery presents these artists as part of an international network that challenged traditional concepts of form, authorship, materials, and the role of art in society.
The gallery collaborates with contemporary artists who expand on, reinterpret, or revitalize ideas and questions from earlier avant-garde movements. These artists contribute to an ongoing dialogue, demonstrating the continued relevance of avant-garde thinking in contemporary art.
Located at 7 Pantovčak Street, the gallery shares its space with the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Foundation. It integrates exhibitions, research, and archival work. Through exhibitions, publishing, and collaboration with institutions, scholars, and collectors, the Avantgarde Gallery seeks to present avant-garde legacies as dynamic and evolving, rather than static history.
